Dialogue: Women in Leadership

Lean In Charter:

"We hope to encourage women and men to pursue their ambitions, and changing the conversation from what we can’t do to what we can do. We will tap into the power of peer support. We will learn to be positive and powerful advocates for one another."

Lean In is a movement started by Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook. She wrote a book titled “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead”. The message of women empowerment in the workplace evolved into an online community dedicated to helping all women achieve their ambitions.

Berkeley-Haas

I took the Lean In framework, and applied it to my workplace and the Haas School of Business. At Berkeley-Haas, I designed the Lean In framework to serve as a platform for peer support, advocating for the voice of the student, while addressing diversity and inclusion. We are not associated with a student club. It is a grassroots movement.

Within Lean In's inception at Haas (just since October 2016), we have nearly 190 students involved. This initiative is becoming a grassroots movement for collective action, providing a safe place for dialogue and growth in areas not addressed in the classroom.

Similar to the Humans of New York format, we photograph students while capturing their stories and insights on life and business.

Berkeley has been the cradle of many initiatives of social change. In light of a changing political and consequently social landscape in America, forums like Lean In become even more relevant.

Motorola

At Motorola I have facilitated over 14 circles across North America and overseas with over 160 women participants.  With my fellow female colleagues, we conducted these circles virtually, via Google Hangouts. It was a great way to broaden our reach.
